Staff Saturday: Linda Watson
One of Beacon's greatest blessings is our amazing staff. To celebrate them, and introduce you to who they are, we feature them on our blog: Staff Saturdays!
Staff Name: Linda Watson
Lives: Oakville, Ontario
How long have you been attending/serving at Beacon?
My volunteering started at least 6 years ago when I signed up for Sr. Girls in the kitchen. I figured that if all of these young women were investing in my daughter for a week, taking time off from work and teaching the word of God, the least I could do was give back my time feeding their bodies as these young ladies were feeding my daughter’s spirit.
What camp have you helped out at recently and what were some highlights?
From helping in the kitchen, and then moving to head cook was a step of faith. I had to let go of my pride, rely on God and step up for the job that was asked of me. My highlights have included weeks of camp without incident - praise God! Some incidents seemed traumatic at the time but a bit hilarious to think of later - like the fire alarm going off in the kitchen during shower time (sorry girls); or leaving camp for a quick run to the store and having to hitch a ride from the tracks on the main road back to camp to get back in time for dinner...and the list goes on.
What are your personal favourite food, place and activity at camp?
My favourite activity at camp is attending Mother/Daughter weekend with my daughter - sleeping in the cabins and enjoying the company.
What are you up to these days?
Currently I am the owner of a 5 pin bowling center in Oakville. I also work for a charity - Toronto Church Planting, as well as volunteering with Bible Study Fellowship and nursery in our church
What’s a talent or hobby of yours that your campers might not know about?
I have to admit to something of a Disney obsession.. My favorite character is Gus Gus the mouse from Cinderella.
Why do you love volunteering at Beacon?
Beacon is my favourite week of the summer. I look forward to it more than any other week. I put every effort to work hard - for God - and the rewards have been awesome: From new friendship both at Beacon and a friend whose cottage is near to the camp, for the daily devotions above the kitchen, praying for the campers and leaders, and slipping out a few recipes from camp to have throughout the year to remind me of camp in the middle of winter.
