Week 5 Summary: Diving Into Ocean Adventures!

This summer, one of our incredible summer staff is taking over the Beacon Blog! Emma “Brio” Deinum will be bringing you highlights of our summer 2020 program, Beacon Unlimited. Here’s a recap about Week 5: Ocean Adventures!

A short but really fun week! The first week of August was filled with awesome cabin times and really fun electives with the Ocean Adventures theme. What a great way to kick off the month of August! Let’s get into Week Five details!

In Comic Drawing, Riff and Shimmer had a blast going through the steps to making comics. With everything from character drawing to creating a storyline with dialogue, all the kids were super creative and made works of art! It was a chill way to spend the morning. In Watercolour Painting, campers made art pieces with different techniques they learned for watercolour style painting. Can you believe that adding salt adds an amazing texture to the painting?

Mad Scientist was a big hit as well. They did many fun experiments and watched YouTube videos of other people doing experiments! Campers learned about biology, chemistry, and physics, while talking about how God made science in very special ways so that we could all live happily on His Earth.

In Pirates of the High Seas, Dash had some lovely words to say about this elective: “ The pirate elective was AMAZING and we called ourselves the Zoom Pirates and went on daily adventures of making pirate ships, singing pirate songs, navigating treacherous waters, defeating sharks and other threats, finding treasure...and walking the plank! We also had a guest pirate take us on a real life treasure hunt on the last day - and I'm happy to report that we were successful!” In the Map Making elective, we continued the pirate theme and made treasure maps, along with other fantasy maps or even making province maps!

In the final elective, Design your own Escape Room, there was a lot going. Each day, the campers and staff worked through an already-created digital escape room (Disney for three days and a Pokemon themed one on Friday), and then we also spent time building our own ocean themed escape room. You can try the completed escape room below:

Cabin Time were also filled with ocean themed games, including an Ocean Adventure Icebreaker game where campers would look at a photo and guess what was going on in the photo. It was fun for conversations and led into some interesting conversations topics about mermaids and shipwrecks. There was also a bonus “blooper” video that had some funny videos of the Summer Staff dressed up as pirates and goofing around, which is always fun to watch! (And fun for myself to edit the videos!)

Now the theme for Week 6 is Amazing Heroes, and of course, God is our ultimate hero. Tune in for another week filled with fun electives and great cabin times!

Until next time,
Brio :)
