Kodiak's Desk: Smarter Every Day
Luke LaRocque
It’s been a long few months of online school and sometimes, we just needed a break. YouTube is a dangerous place to be sometimes, but we know that there are lots of great resources that can contribute to the development of a child.
Enter Smarter Every Day.
Part “How Does that Work?” and part “I Bet You’ve Never Thought About This Before”, the episodes focus on great science, technology and information that your kids (and teenagers) will love learning about strange and wonderful things. Case in point: here’s a great 8 minute video about learning to ride a backwards bicycle (something we should have Mr Tok build at camp someday!).
It’s hard to know what you’re getting on YouTube, which I know that a lot of parents think about. It’s certainly something I think about all the time. As a Christian father, I want to know that I can trust the content of the things that my kids watch.
The Bible says in 1 Thessalonians 5:21 to “test everything; hold fast what is good.” I always try to watch things in advance when possible, and I recommend that you do the same. In the case of Smarter Every Day, I appreciate that Destin Sandlin, the host and creator, is a devout Christian who cares deeply about his faith and about honouring God. He has represented our faith in one of the scariest places on earth, the Internet, and does it without apology or compromise. I deeply appreciate that in a person, and suggest that you check out their website and YouTube channel when you have time.
As we continue to journey through time apart from each other, one of our goals is to continue to bring our Beacon family some resources and plans that can help redeem the time in front of us as we wait for the world return towards normal. That’s why Luke “Kodiak” LaRocque is sharing a book, podcast, movie or other cultural product every month or so that could be of interest to you and helpful to your family!
