Week 7: A Narnian Adventure!
Beacon Bible Camp
This summer, one of our incredible summer staff is taking over the Beacon Blog! Emma “Brio” Deinum will be bringing you highlights of our summer 2020 program, Beacon Unlimited. Here’s a recap about Week 7: Narnia.
So, coming from the person who has never seen or read any of The Chronicles of Narnia, our Narnia theme week was a success! I know, I know, I’ve never seen or read Narnia? How? Well, after this week that was filled with many fun cabin times and electives, I have read the first book and am now a fan. Now onto the details of the second last week of camp!
Right off the bat in the Drama Llama elective, we have to hear what Dash had to say about this elective: “We had an amazing time acting in lots of silly ways! We did a warm-up called "Sad Sadder Saddest" where we would start with an emotion and then make it more extreme twice… it resulted in some hilarious behaviour! Some of our favourite games were "School Bus", where each person had a different personality and would pretend to get on the bus, at which point the bus driver and everyone else on the bus had to start acting like them too! We also loved "Director's Cut", where we would create a silly mini script and then read it in lots of different ways. Our favourite ways to read it were angry, underwater, and baby voice!” Sounds like a really fun time!
In the Bracelets are Back elective, which ran during the first week of Beacon Unlimited, there were some great tutorials campers were led through. We re-visited some bracelet patterns that were done in the first week of Beacon Unlimited, and some were new, like the cobra pattern and the addition of beads. Everyone had a relaxing and creative time! Speaking of a relaxing time, the Narnian Art elective was filled with just that! Campers and leaders had an amazing time making some very fun art based on the Narnia theme and the snowy atmosphere. They made snowflakes, snow globes, shields, a lion’s face and even a fiery lantern!
In Ready Set… Action!, we had some great exercises and movement-based activities, and it was a super fun way to keep active this week! In the Silly Songs elective, campers learned many silly songs from Shimmer like the Burrito song and Banana song, all in preparation for the virtual campfire happening this week. Along with “Repeat After Me” songs, campers even drew what their favourite burrito looks like.
And now, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe elective. Right from the very start of the summer when the Narnia week was being planned, Kodiak had this elective in mind. So naturally, Logic and I took over. Me, being the only one on the Zoom call who had never read the book or seen the movies, read the book out loud while campers doodled pictures from the story. We discussed what was going on in the story before and after the reading of the day and campers also even took turns reading from their own copies! It was super fun, and I’m happy to say I’m a fan of the Narnia series (and I’ll be reading the next book of course!).
It’s crazy how time flies when you’re having fun. I can’t believe we’re at Week 8 already. The Famous Duos week is sure to be fun with many fun electives planned and special material for cabin times, but also a virtual campfire! And if you haven’t completed your Summer Art Project, make sure you get it done soon! The summer staff had a zoom call where we all started to work on ours, and we all had a blast while working on it. Now get ready for one last week of Beacon Unlimited!
Until next time,
Brio :)
